Fundamentals of Directing will explore the numerous practical and abstract facets of a director’s role in a production: from choosing a play, script analysis, casting, as well as blocking and giving notes to finding and encouraging both your actors’ voices as well as your own. Directors will also fill roles as actors in order to gain understanding and respect for the work that happens on stage (no acting experience necessary!)

Fundamentals of Directing Workshop
This workshop covers the fundamentals of both straight stage makeup and character makeup. The first half focuses on straight stage techniques, including base application, facial structure definition, and basic contouring designed to keep features visible under bright theatre lighting. The second half shifts to character design, teaching practical methods for aging, creating specific character traits, and using basic techniques. Attendees will practice techniques hands-on and learn how to adapt makeup for the stage.
Jin has spent the last three years designing and constructing drag and burlesque stage costumes, specializing in quick changes and dramatic reveals. Their professional background includes working as a color and makeup consultant for a K-beauty app, analyzing facial features, skin tones, and color theory to craft tailored aesthetic recommendations. They have also served as the lead makeup artist for model shoots with Seoulicious and Seoul Street Studios across Seoul. Additionally, Jin recently collaborated with Yonsei University’s theatre group in partnership with the Global Actors Society, assisting with production elements to ensure actors were stage-ready. Combining a solid foundation in shade matching with years of hands-on performance prep, they focus on delivering functional, striking makeup looks designed for the stage.
Required: For hygiene reasons, participants must bring their own personal make up and a mirror.
Recommended: We also recommend bringing a battery-powered light or lamp if possible.
